While Google’s tablet business is going through an existential crisis, Samsung went ahead and today introduced a flagship upgrade to its Galaxy Tab series. The new Galaxy Tab S4 is designed to offer “tablet mobility and PC power) and hence, comes equipped Samsung DeX which allows users to turn the tablet into a desktop computer through external peripherals and a proprietary dock. In addition, the Tab S4 is also the first tablet to feature a hardware-based facial recognition system and sports an Iris scanner on the front just like the company’s high-end phones.
Being a Galaxy Tab, of course, the tablet has an S-pen bundled in the box which lets you do all sorts of annotation stuff like doodling live messages, translating text, and more. As far as the specifications are concerned, the Galaxy Tab S4 is packed with power. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and a gigantic 7,300mAh battery. On the front, you’ll find a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED display with minimal bezels, a Quad HD resolution and 16:10 aspect ratio.
Like the iPad Pro, the Galaxy Tab S4 also features four speakers which are tuned by the audio manufacturer, AKG and promises a battery life of 16 hours. Another highlight of the new tablet is the set of far-field microphones which lets you easily summon a virtual assistant. It comes preloaded with Android 8.1 with Samsung’s own skin on top. There’s a single 13-megapixel camera sensor on both the front and back.
Aware of the dearth of tablet-optimized apps on Android, Samsung is primarily also targetting at several industries such as POS systems in retail or healthcare scenarios. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is priced at $650 for the 64GB variant and $750 for 256GB. Preorders open today and shipping commences on this month’s 10th which is a day later than the company’s forthcoming Galaxy Note event. LTE models will be available soon. There are two color options — Black and White.
