Taranaki High School Shuts Down Computer System After Hack

Portions of Pennridge School District’s computer network were disrupted, but the system was not compromised in an incident that led to a student being charged with computer crimes, Pennridge School District said the day after police released information about the charges.

In a May 15 release, Pennridge Regional Police Department said a ninth-grade Pennridge High School student was charged with two felony offenses of unlawful use of a computer after the department received a report on April 10 that the student had “hacked” into the school computer system, causing it to shut down periodically over several days.

“The student used the district-provided school laptop to hack into the system. Once in the system, the student ran programs which disrupted the system in the High School, Administrative Office, Health Services and Transportation,” the police department release said.

District officials did not immediately respond to calls about the incident, but the following statement was released May 16 by Joe Ferry, the district’s public information officer:

“In reference to previous news reports, the incident that resulted in the arrest of a student was a denial of service attack that temporarily disrupted a portion of the district’s computer network. The network itself was neither ‘hacked’ nor otherwise compromised. At no time was data breached, accessed or disseminated.

“The district has safeguards in place to prevent such an intrusion.

“Other than that, the district will have no comment since this incident is currently under investigation.”
